Description
As a leading woodworking tooling dealer we received a lot of inquiries for DW-735 knife sets because of customer dissatisfaction with the longevity of their factory knives. After some research and speaking with manufacturers of planer blades we quickly started to understand why. It was explained to us that the factory knives for all portable planers are manufactured from coiled stock that is then uncoiled, stamped out and sharpened. This is due to the high volume manufacturing. Logic will now explain why the factory knives don't last so long. You can only make steel so hard and still be coiled up. Some of the knives on the market are also made with laminated tips hence the reason they can't be sharpened. What we decided to do to satisfy demand for customers wanting a better product was have our own set made from some of the best tool steel on the market. We chose T1 tool steel because of it's 18% tungsten content and great wear properties. If you are not aware of tungsten it's what makes up carbide and you know how much longer carbide lasts than steel. Our knives are machined from T1 bar stock, not stamped out, and are extremely sharp.
Each planer blade has all the same holes as the factory knives and are also double sided. If you were so inclined you could probably hone an edge on them if they do get dull. Because they are solid steel and not laminated you can sharpen them as much as you want as long as they are usable.
