Makita 2040 Thichness Planer 400mm / 15-3/4 inch

The Makita 2040 planer is an excellent choice for the serious woodworker. The large capacity is an obvious advantage, which this machine achieves without compromising precision.
In terms of thickness of the work it can plane wood as thick as about 7 inches down to about 1/8 inch. Maximum depth of cut in a single pass is about 1/8 inch for narrower boards up to about 4 inches. For wider boards Makita recommends a depth of cut up to 1mm or 1/25 inch.
The machine uses a universal motor (with brushes). The advantage of this is a good torque characteristic under load, while still operating on an ordinary 110 volt circuit. A slight drawback is that it is a bit more noisy than an induction motor.
This is a great machine but one must take care of it. In particular the feed rollers must be kept clean using alcohol from time to time, but never turpentine or the like, especially after using on green wood.  When shopping for a machine of this type and age finding one with feed rollers in good condition is of paramount importance  I have included a picture showing the feed rollers taken from underneath. You can see that the feed rollers are in very good shape; sound, clean and shiny; this is a crucial point to consider.
