Product Description
This is a simple tester for the Zilog Z80 CPU and pin compatible Z80 CPU chips.
The tester is designed to have the Z80 execute the No Operation (NOP) instruction continuously.
A slow speed clock drives the Z80 whose data lines have been pulled high.
8 led attached to the Address lines allow the visual count to be observed from binary 1 to binary 256.
Normally, upon power being applied, the Z80 under test starts up and the count can be observed, a reset switch is available if this auto startup does not occur to force a reset
Power is via a USB B cable (not included).
The board can also have a 1MHz block oscillator added (5 Volt 8 pin style) which is pin selectable instead of the slow clock. This oscillator allows additional testing to be conducted, and to facilitate this
the address lines are bought out to a header to allow easier probing by a scope or analyzer. This oscillator is not included, however details on its use are in the user instructions, along with part numbers for several types/suppliers.
The Z80 has been available for many years and is used in many 8 bit computers, plus calculators, musical instruments, arcade consoles etc. This simple tester is a first line Go-No-Go unit that will help isolate defective or good chips.
