It enables use of the rare white-cased Unidisk 3.5 drive!
The is a 28-pin custom ROM chip for the classic Apple IIC.
It resembles the Apple brand enhanced ROM # 342-0033.
Inside the IIC, the older UNENHANCED ROM is # 342-0277.
The Enhanced ROM chip adds these features to your IIC:
(1) Capability to operate the Unidisk 3.5" 800K external disk drive.
(2) The checkerboard self-test: Hold down the two Apple-keys at power-
up;
If enhanced, you will see a moving checkerboard pattern which
ends with, "SYSTEM OK." The self-test will identify any specific
RAM memory chip
that has gone bad. Other deficiencies are also
identified. The
checkerboard self-test is shown in the fourth photo.
If you
presently
can get the checkerboard self-test with your IIc, then
your computer is already enhanced and my ROM chip is not needed.
(3) A customized brief one-two word message at the center-top
of the opening screen. This message is displayed for three
seconds every time when the Apple IIc is powered up.
A two-sided instruction sheet to install the chip is included.
Essentially,
you just replace the existing 28-pin ROM chip
with this chip, then make two minor soldered changes
on the IIC motherboard.
A photocopy will be enclosed of Otto Linzmeyer's article in the
January 1988 issue of A+ magazine,
"
THE APPLE IIC FAMILY TREE
,"
which describes firmware/hardware differences among
the three distinct versions of Apple IIC that were released
(1984-1988). Also enclosed will be a photocopied section from the
Apple IIc Technical Reference Manual
(1985) that describes
the Unidisk 3.5 ROM code that is contained in this chip.
The Apple IIC Plus differs totally from the three earlier IIc models.
If you bought a IIc CPU from me, then its ROM is already enhanced.

"PRINT PEEK" ROM TEST:
"0" ON THE SCREEN
The enclosed article, "IIc Family Tree,"
presents a keyboard test to identify
which ROM version your IIc presently
has. First, turn on the computer. Then
press CONTROL followed by RESET. The
Basic prompt, a left-facing bracket ]
will be displayed on the screen. Next,
type:
PRINT PEEK (64447)
followed
by RETURN. The computer's response
identifies which Apple //c you have:
255 Original (unenhanced) //c
0 Unidisk 3.5 //c
3 or 4 Memory-Expansion //c
Installing the ROM chip purchased from
this ad will upgrade your //c from the Original
version to the Unidisk 3.5 version. It is impractical
to become a Memory-Expansion //c because the
two earlier versions lack the motherboard socket
for the one meg Ram Express memory board.
NEWS FLASH: December 23, 2020
A IIc user who bought the ROM 0 enhanced
ROM chip from me, reported that this chip
enables the Apple IIc to operate a 32meg
hard drive, connected to the IIc at the DB-19
external floppy drive socket. Can someone
check this for me? I suggested to the buyer who
reported this, to prepare a KansasFest presentation
on it. Many Apple IIc users would be enthused
to confirm that the IIc can operate an external
hard drive!
REFUND GUARANTEE FOR
USA BUYERS AND ALSO FOR
WORLDWIDE OVERSEAS BUYERS
The IIc ROMs are all guaranteed to work! About
147 these ROM chips have already been sold.
All are pre-tested prior to shipping, and I
have had no complaints, so far, from buyers.

ABSTRACT
Most computer equipment contain EPROMs in their circuits:
CPUs, printers, interface cards, or peripherals.
The EPROM
chips contain firmware code to control
operation of the
device. An EPROM looks like a
large IC chip: It is wide, with
24 to 40 pins. There is a
small round window in the center of
the upper side of the chip, with a microlattice of fine metal
wires visible through the clear quartz-glass window.
The
EPROM chips can be erased and reconfigured by hours of
exposure to ultraviolet light, followed by software-controlled
"burning" of fresh code. The use
of EPROMs allows the periodic
upgrading of firmware. In my
presentation, EPROMs and
related hardware will be shown and discussed. Knowledge
about EPROM technology should be shared
among Apple II
devotees because the EPROMS can go bad after years of service.
The firmware code
can be stored on floppy disks, and then
used to rejuvenate EPROMs that have gone bad. In the long
run, spanning future decades, Apple II equipment will survive only
if the firmware code on the
EPROMs has been preserved on disks;
once on disk, the code
on could be preserved for
indefinite archiving
by recopying it to other long-lasting media such as CD-ROMs or
flash drives.
Apple II users should learn EPROM-burning skills,
with the needed hardware, to
create fresh copies of the firmware
code for themselves and to be shared widely with others.

INTERNATIONAL: SALES
TO OTHER COUNTRIES
I will ship to other countries.
I retain the post office receipt as proof of mailing.
International mails in recent years have become very reliable, so I will replace
any ROM chip lost during shipping. Buyers have told me that Ebay's "Global
Shipping Program" (GSP) is very expensive for small lightweight packages
such as this ROM chip, or for small keyboard parts such as keyswitches
or keycaps,
so international first class mailing is preferred; even then,
U.S. postage rates
begin at .00 for most foreign countries beyond
Canada.
In mid-2020, Ebay has launched a special international
shipping service, by which the seller ships to a trans-shipment
service in CA or KY, from which it is carried to the foreign destination.
Look at all my
items offered for
sale; combined shipping of two or
more items costs
only slightly more than shipping a single small item.
I must guess
at the weight / postage cost. I will guess
slightly high,
but will refund any excess amount
paid for postage,
to the buyer's
Ebay account,
immediately after
the item has been shipped.
